Government offices around the world

Jan Banning was able to capture government officials in the wild, taking pictures in 8 vastly different countries. All of these people may have desks to sit at, but the offices range from plush to just a table outside.

“Bureaucratics is a project consisting of a book and exhibition containing 50 photographs, the product of an anarchist’s heart, a historian’s mind and an artist’s eye. It is a comparative photographic study of the culture, rituals and symbols of state civil administrations and its servants in eight countries on five continents, selected on the basis of polical, historical and cultural considerations: Bolivia, China, France, India, Liberia, Russia, the United States, and Yemen.” – Jan Banning

Despite the incredible diversity of desks and wall ornaments and headgear and office equipment, what I love is the similarity in pose. Let's call it "the proud official at their desk" pose. Awesome photography.

A really wonderful collection of photos! Good use of light, wonderfully evocative scenes, but above a wonderful job of getting a variety of people to look into the camera and be themselves.

American ones are the best paid but on the other hand they look terribly fat. You can't have all the advantages.

If I am not mistaken, some of these photographs have been featured in GEO magazine. This is a much larger compilation, no doubt. GEO seems to have done a concise version of it because I distinctly remember the photo of the man in the Liberian Traffic Police Station, with that blackboard in the background.
A great photo study!

He's picked up Bihar, possibly the poorest state in India. He could have chosen Gujarat or Maharashtra. Trust me, some Govt. offices I have seen in Mumbai are better than ones in US!

Amazing. Beautiful pics! And yes (to the anonymous above), Indian Govt. offices are a lot more different, but then, it depends on the location. Some are worse; some better!
